More RAM for PC - PC Specialist cannot/will not supply

Hello,

my PC has 4gb RAM. Its only a few months old and I am now into 3D modeling for which I need a lot of RAM.

When I bought the PC I was told that I could have a max of 16Gb onboard, so now I have asked PC Specialist to supply me with 2x8Gb RAM - below is the reply that I got;

"Dear Michael

We would first of all like to apologise for the inconvenience, after checking your motherboard it seems that it has two memory slots which means that you would need 2 x 8GB RAMs, unfortunately we do not sell that as pair as we have 4 x 4GB RAMs.

If we can assist you any further, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Many Thanks"

I am amazed by this, but I ordered 2 x 8Gb from a local shop, but when it was fitted it would not work in my PC & they said that I must require a specific type of RAM - which I don't understand.

Really I'm not keen on purchasing from another supplier because of the warranty implications, but now it seems that I cannot order from elsewhere because I cannot be sure to get the right type of RAM, and PC Specialist will not supply me with the 2 x 8GB.

What can I do?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello there Mike.

PCS dont sell x 8gb packs of RAM. Just get a 2 x 4gb from PCS as that will put your RAM up to 12GB which is enough for doing 3d Modelling.

I am amazed that you are amazed.

8g modules are only just begining to appear, but generally in the very high end server systems that may have 64gb or more.


The 8gb modules that we are seeing are currently around £150 - £200 per stick. So, it is not case that we will not supply, we cannot at this moment in time. I would be very interested to find out what the 2 x 8gb memory you purchased was and how much it cost ;)

You will not find any memory vendors such as corsair or kingston yet offering kits with 8gb modules.

The 8gb modules that we are seeing are currently around £200 per stick. Also note that no motherboards that we have sold or currently sell have been tested with or qualified for use with 8gb modules by the manufacturer.

yeh i guess, but still went against both things i highlighted

also did you check my post in the feedback section, i think it was an error on the configurator and you dont want to confuse people with lower speed than it is

Yes, it would be, I'm assuming JamesMLB missed the bit about your motherboard only having two slots total and was assuming you'd have two free for the extra 2x4GB ones

also, the memory you have shown us from amazon, is registered ecc dimm, and almost certainly will not work on your board.

So, it seems that I can get 2x4Gb from PS Specialist now, total 8Gb in 2 slots.

Is there any news on when PC Specialist will be able to supply 2x8Gb?

If I have to go elsewhere, what do I have to specify?

Your motherboard user guide will specify the type of memory required,
you could download the latest QVL(qualified vendors list) for your motherboard
from manufacturers website although I'm not sure they have tested 8GB modules yet.

Thanks for that, I would still like to purchase from PC Specialist if possible, is anyone here in a position to give an estimate on then PCS might be able to supply?

As soon as the non ecc varients are readily availiable, cant really put a time frame on that im afraid!

Dont forget all the links here for 8gb modules are server spec RAM and will not work in most mainboards.
