Since when has heat been an issue with GPU's?

This thread fails.

Fermi is not the first line of cards to bring an increase in heat / power consumption, and not the first to have revised GPU's with their tackle cut off like the gf104/106 over the gf100.

This heat is bad / power consumption is bad trend saddens me.

This "insert DX11 card here" card is running way hotter than my Voodoo card it must suck logic sickens me.

The 465 is the technically superior card, its in black and white here:

GeForce GTX 465 main features:

•GPU: GF100 @ 607MHz / 40nm
•Streaming multiprocessors: 11
•Shader processors or streaming processors: 352 @ 1215MHz
•GFLOPS: 855 (GTX480: 1345 – HD5870: 2720)
•Memory: 1024MB GDDR5 @ 802MHz / 256-bit
•Texture units: 44
•Color ROPs: 32

GeForce GTX 460 specifications

•GPU: GF104 @ 675MHz / 40nm
•Shader processors: 336 @ 1350MHz (twice the core clock speed).
•Streaming multiprocessors: 7
•Memory: 768MB (192-bit) or 1024MB (256-bit) GDDR5 @ 900MHz (real speed) or 1800MHz (DDR speed) or 3600MHz (QDR speed). More information about graphics memory speed HERE.
•ROPs: 32 (1024MB version) or 24 (768MB version)
•Texture units: 56

PS my 480 has never got over 50c the logic here, it fails.

Yarp my 480 is watercooled, however with people debating card temps with different cases / gpu fans / ambient temps etc i thought what the heck to scientific process, random numbers win over logical debate in any forum.

GPU heat is relative, GPU heat is not a problem / issue / factor when it is within the cards designed limitations, which was kind of my point.

So to sum up this 460 vs 465 debate:

GF100>GF104>GF106. Technical Fact.

Im not too excited, i think we will see variations on GF100 for a long time now (think 8xxx series to GTX2xx), it would be nice to see a fully enabled GF100 card released at some point but it is far more likely we will just see dual GPU and or overclocked GF104/106 cards instead.

Damn hippies moaning about power / heat have ruined the fun for all of us.

Your 480 doesn't count though because you're using a full custom water loop which doesn't represent normal cooling for most users. It is nice to see that other users also care about heat and power efficiency though :)

Your confusing the quality and capability of a GPU based on the cooling solution, when non reference cards will vary in this regard from make to make. It does count, and was kind of the whole point :p

When I was researching whether 460 or 465 I saw a couple of benchmarks and almost all games showed the 460 actually beating the 465, with the 465 coming closer to the 700MB version of the 460 than the 1GB. True it's GF100 which is better that 104 but it's a completely stipped down 100 compared to a proper 104 and that makes me more comfortable inside too ;).

If youre designing stuff on photoshop or other cuda enabled software, the 465 will beat the 460. In games, sometimes its the other way round
